What does "18-in-1" mean? Where can I find recipes and recommended dilutions for your soaps?
Dr. Bronner's soaps can be used for washing your face, hands, and hair; they can be used for hair removal or shaving, as well as shower gel, toothpaste, or for washing fruit, washing dishes (by hand), laundry, floor cleaning, aromatherapy, all types of cleaning, including windows and toilets, or even for bathing your dog and controlling the appearance of mites, ants, or aphids. These are eighteen possible uses. However, over time our customers have given us feedback on other ways to use our soaps. Tell us what other activities you use our soaps for! To get started with recipes and dilutions, check out Lisa Bronner's list of tips .
What does "Castela" mean? Is bar soap a Castile soap, similar to liquid soap?
For centuries, a 100% vegetable-based soap was made in the Castile region of Spain, using olive oil. The name Castile then came to be given to any soap made from one or more vegetable oils. These soaps, through the use of the designation Castile, were distinguished from others produced using tallow or animal fat. The designation “Pure-Castille” or “Pure Castile Soap” is now the User's guarantee that the soap they are buying is ecological and simple, and not a complex mixture of detergents with a large ecological impact and low biodegradability. Unfortunately, there are several mixtures of synthetic detergents that are erroneously labeled as “liquid soap,” despite not containing any real soap. Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soaps, liquid or bar, are both 100% vegetable oil-based. However, the difference between liquid and bar soaps is that the former uses potassium hydroxide to saponify the vegetable oils, while bar soap uses sodium hydroxide for the same purpose. To learn more about the difference between our liquid and bar soaps, check out the post available on Lisa Bronner's blog.
What is the expiration date of your products? How can I find out when they were manufactured?
As a rule, we recommend that Dr. Bronner's body care products be used within three years of purchase. While our soaps are self-preserving, since our products are biodegradable, we do not advise storing them for longer periods as they may lose effectiveness. To identify the manufacturing date of the products, you can consult the lot code, a number printed or affixed to the packaging, often located below the label. The first digit refers to the year (for example, “2” will be “2012”, “3” will be “2013”), while the following three digits refer to the day of the year, out of a total of 365 days, in which the product was manufactured. For example, if the first four digits of the lot code are “3165”, then the product was manufactured in 2013 on the 165th day of the year (which would be June 14th). You can access the calendar showing the total number of days in the year here. Due to space constraints, we use a different system for our Organic Balms. For this reason, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the expiration date of our balms, please contact our Customer Service Department directly.
Can I use your soaps as shampoo?
Of course! In fact, many of our customers choose to do this! However, it's important to complement the wash with an acidic conditioner that requires rinsing. You can use a diluted cider vinegar solution for this purpose. Our soaps are excellent for washing hair, however they can leave it looking messy. Rinsing with an acidic conditioner helps close the hair cuticles, leaving it soft and silky. To learn more about using our soaps as shampoos, please visit Lisa Bronner's blog post on this topic.
Which of their products are vegan? Do they test their products on animals?
All Dr. Bronner's products sold in this store are Vegan certified, with the exception of our Organic Balms, which contain organically sourced beeswax. All our products are Leaping Bunny certified, which certifies that the products are cruelty-free and attests that they were manufactured without resorting to any type of animal testing. We use beeswax in the manufacture of our balms because we have not yet been able to find organic plant-based beeswax, and Sue Kastensen, responsible for the creation and manufacture of our balms, has not yet found a plant-based substitute that has the fantastic qualities of natural beeswax. Based on her experience and training with Native American herbalist Keewaydinoquay, Sue created the lip balms using only avocado oil and beeswax, since beeswax has antibacterial properties and acts as a sunscreen, thus providing an excellent barrier to keep lips hydrated.
Why is palm kernel oil now an ingredient in liquid soap? Is it sustainable?
With the growth of our company, it is possible to establish more and more partnerships with organic and fair trade projects that support and encourage organic farming practices, fair wages, and economic development. Incorporating organic and fair trade palm kernel oil into our soaps allows us to support the excellent work done by Natural Habitats in Ecuador, where small farmers sustainably cultivate the palm tree from which the oil is extracted, receiving fair prices for the fruit. Since the fatty acids present in coconut oil and palm kernel oil are similar, they can be used interchangeably in soap making, as both produce a rich and abundant lather with identical characteristics. No rainforest, wildlife, or habitat is harmed or damaged as a result of this palm kernel oil production. Natural Habitats is certified by IMO's Fair for Life program, which grants the most rigorous fair trade and sustainability certification worldwide, a program that also certifies Dr. Bronner's partner companies producing fair trade coconut and palm oil, Serendipol and Serendipalm.
Are your tropical oils, including palm oil and palm kernel oil, produced sustainably?
Some Dr. Bronner's customers have expressed concern about the palm, palm kernel, and coconut oils used in our soaps, wondering if they come from recent plantations that have replaced rainforests or if they are the result of some kind of environmental destruction. However, there is no reason to worry! Dr. Bronner's only buys products from farmers with 100% organic certification – free of agrochemicals (pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers) and in locations where soil fertility is naturally stimulated by composting, using manure, or with mulch made from crop residues. Unlike palm oil from large plantations in Indonesia, the production of our oils does not contribute to deforestation in any way. Our palm oil comes from approximately 1012 hectares of farms in Ghana, established several decades ago, and our palm kernel oil comes from small, sustainable farms in Ecuador. We encourage farmers to improve the profitability of the palm fruit by extracting more oil from the same plantation area. Our coconut oil comes from approximately 500 farms or ranches (small and medium-sized) in Sri Lanka, most of which have been owned by the same family for generations. We also encourage our farmers to intercrop other crops that may be beneficial in order to provide biological fertilizer for the main crop at lower prices. This practice contributes to better fertilization of soils and farms, increasing the profit of small-scale plantations and farms, allowing them to compete with larger plantations. Are your soaps safe/recommended for babies?
Dr. Bronner's soaps are extremely gentle and safe for babies, however, as they are not "tear-free," care must be taken to avoid contact with the baby's eyes. For babies, the Gentle-Baby line (unscented) is particularly recommended, as their skin may be more sensitive to the essential oils present in scented soaps.
Can I bathe my pets with your soaps?
Yes! Dr. Bronner's soaps are great for bathing pets, especially dogs – see Lisa Bronner's demonstration. As for cats, some extra care may be needed. Many essential oils can be toxic to cats, especially tea tree oil, lavender oil, or peppermint oil. Therefore, for cats, as well as for babies, we recommend the Gentle-Baby (Unscented) line.
Do your products have a satisfaction guarantee? What is your return policy?
Please refer to our Return Policy. If you have any questions regarding our Return Policy, please contact our Customer Service Department.
Do your soaps contain foaming agents or detergents such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)?
No, not at all. Dr. Bronner's soaps are 100% Pure Castile Soaps. The abundant lather comes from the high quantity of coconut oil, capable of producing a more abundant natural lather than any detergent. “Pure Castile Soap” is our guarantee that the product you are using is genuinely organic and, simply, soap – not a complex mixture of detergents with a high environmental impact due to waste from the manufacturing process and/or the low biodegradability of the detergent itself. Unfortunately, there are several mixtures of synthetic detergents that are mistakenly labeled as "liquid soap," despite containing no actual soap.
Are your products "FREE" of gluten, soy, corn, or nuts? Why am I having an allergic reaction?
In general, Dr. Bronner's products are gluten-free and contain no traces of soy, tree nuts, or other common allergens. However, there are some exceptions: • Our Castile Liquid Soaps, Castile Bar Soaps, and Sugar Soaps contain citric acid, derived from tapioca. If you are experiencing an allergic reaction, you may be sensitive to one of the essential oils in our products, such as peppermint oil or lavender oil. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend using our Baby-Friendly (Unscented) line. • Our toothpaste contains glycerin, derived from organic soybean oil. • Our coconut oils are produced in a nut-free facility, using equipment exclusively dedicated to coconut oil production. Botanically, coconut is not considered a tree nut. It is a tree nut, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Although allergic reactions to coconut have been documented, most people who are allergic to tree nuts can eat coconut without any consequences. If you are allergic to tree nuts, talk to your allergist before adding coconut oil to your diet.
I get a burning sensation when I use peppermint soap. Is that normal?
It's not frequent (most consumers report a refreshing sensation caused by the menthol), however some customers have reported feeling a burning sensation in more sensitive areas. Unfortunately, in these situations the only solution is to switch to one of the other scents.
